Every parent’s worst nightmare

Every parent wants happiness for their child. But what happens when your child is hurting – and you don’t know how to help?

This was Jean’s* story. Her daughter Lily* suffered from severe depression and a dangerous reliance on alcohol and drugs. For Lily, self-medicating numbed her pain. For Jean, it was a living nightmare.

“I felt helpless. Our relationship was fragile, and I was really scared that I would lose her” ˗ Jean

Getting the right help

Lily was spiraling out of control, but after witnessing a drug overdose at a music festival, she finally reached out to her mum. They applied to Triple Care Farm, a treatment centre for young Australians, funded by Sir David Martin Foundation. Here she could recover from her addiction and receive clinical care and treatment for her mental illness.

Jean remembers how quickly Lily improved once she had the right help. She is now so grateful, because it saved both her daughter’s life and their relationship.

The painful truth is:

Trauma
or homelessness often precedes addiction

93%
of the young people who need our help with addiction live with a mental illness, usually undiagnosed

Suicide
is the leading cause of death for young Australians

Addiction is a tragic reality for many families.

It doesn’t discriminate and can tear even the most loving families apart. Young people in crisis need care and best practice treatment so they can get their lives back on track.
